Arundel

Friday, 7 October, with Kim at the wheel, we headed south to Arundel for a visit to Arundel Castle, home of the Howard family. This is the same Howard family that produced Anne Boelyn and Catherine Howard. The present owners are the Duke and Duchess of Norfork, which may seem strange since the house is in Suffolk, but advantageous marriages produce lots of good spoils. The family is still Catholic and survived the Civil War by a conversion of convenience to the Church of England until things cooled down. The small church on the castle grounds is divided in half with the Catholic portion open to the castle side and the Anglican portion open to the Village. The imposing Cathedral in Arundel is Catholic and was financed by the 15th Duke in 1869, so it is Victorian Gothic. All in all, it was a great visit.

 Happy travelers at Arundel Castle

Fitzalan Chapel: Catholic half of the church

This new garden, 10 years old, is fantastic, with all the
architectural elements made of teak

 Super-intriguing design

Ten years ago, this garden was a parking lot

 Lovely pinks and purples

 Reds and greens

The keep is part of the original medieval castle

View of the Arun River Valley

 View across the walls

The newer part of the castle is Victorian including the chapel

 The fortifications are much older

The war memorial the town square (triangle?)

The ladies and Brig off to look at some cute stuff

Arundel Cathedral: Church of Our Lady and Saint Philip Howard
(the family has a saint!) sits just outside the garden wall

 The Victorians did nice work

The Parish and Priory Church of Saint Nicholas, the
Anglican half of the church at Arundel Castle

The town from the church hill

 Flint construction at Arundel

Beautiful fall afternoon in the countryside at the foot of the castle hill

The Cathedral and Castle dominate the Arundel skyline

A stop for groceries at Sainsbury's in East Grinstead on the way home

Fish and chips from Moreno's in Edenbridge for supper

Today finished off my itinerary for this part of the trip, so we will have to see what tomorrow brings. That's all for now.

OXO
