Guess what is going on next door? I thought a basement was a pipe dream (pardon the opium reference), but a couple of weeks ago, Uncle announced to Annie et al. that Juan and his Guatemalan compatriots would be arriving the next day to dig a basement -- one bucket at a time. It is going incredibly quickly.

I guess you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs

That's over 9 feet deep

The buckets in question

The walls of the pit and floor joists above
That's all for now.

Ah, this takes me right back to the time when Juan came over and dug my parent's basement!
Where is the hole? What is going to be int the basement? DETAILS?
ps WV Derooter appropriate non?
Maren: the hole is on the north side of the house. There will be storage and possibly a media room to take the place of the front bedroom, which will become a proper guest room. There will be a stairway inside going down from where the linen closet is and an outside stairway where the hole is.

Is that safe? It creeps me out. Is it going to collapse?
Pretty impressive! Now I have a better understanding of how the tunnels from Mexico to the U.S. get built.
Anna: I'm not 100% sure of the safety. It certainly could collapse. They should start the cement work soon.
Bill: How about all the way from Guatemala?
