Between Reno Visits

On Monday, 11 May, we headed back to Provo. Life at home has the same rhythm: tons of rain, walks, family, friends, cooking, and SNAP. It is all pretty much ordinary, but enjoyable, nonetheless. The unusual bits include a new puppy for the Colvers (to keep Lu company), a visit to the Payson Temple open house, and demolition of the Widtsoe Building at BYU.

 Leaving Reno on May 11

Back in the compound for dinner and FHE

There is more to report from Reno, but that's all for now.

Mothers Day in Reno

I went with the Hastings to the Mothers Day program at their ward where Anders and Clara sang with the primary. Back at home I made a coconut cake for dinner. I gave Kris a lavender plant, a dark-chocolate Cadbury bar, and a homemade card.  We took a lovely hike up the Thomas Creek Trail to Timberline Drive, which is where, believe it or not, the timberline starts and where Rob and I started our Dry Pond loop the other day. Rob put together a delicious dinner: steak, roasted sprouts, garlic mashed spuds, and beautiful fresh berries. Tonight everyone is practicing the piano and getting ready for school tomorrow.

Not the best coconut cake I ever had

Tomorrow we head for home, so the excitement will likely end. That's all for now.

Sacramento

Today Rob drove us up over Donner Pass and down into Sacramento. I have been through on the freeway many times on our way to Palo Alto, but have never stopped. So this was a treat. We spent the morning in Old Sacramento, the historic district next to the river. After lunch we went to the Railroad Museum, which turned out to be fun and instructive. On the way back to Reno we stopped at IKEA so Lucy could get a frame for her NY Subway poster. We made an unsuccessful attempt at sampling some cream puffs at the Westfield Galleria Mall in Roseville. Beard Papa's has closed in that location. Oh well. Back home, Lucy framed her poster, which now looks really good.

Whizzing along I-80 across the Sierra Nevada

 Old Sacramento

Sacramento was the western terminus of the cross-country railway
and there is much railway stuff to remind you

 The crew on the move

I wonder if the Brannan House had anything to do with Samuel

Old Sac with the new Sacramento in the distance

Lots of good stuff to purchase should you desire

There are some great architectural bits

Another view of the old and new

 The schoolhouse

This kind of desk was still in use at East High School in the 1960s

 Serious student, happy student

Tower Bridge is a Sacramento icon

 Not England, but REALLY good

 Lunchtime

A tiny version of an old friend in an antiques store

 Wonderful cast-iron detail

It is so great that they have saved and preserved
all these fine old buildings

This is how you crossed the Sierra Nevada in 1869

The whole crew at the Railroad Museum

 Lots of great old trains

 The kitchen on a streamliner

Looks like the Bondes in Porto Alegre back in 1965

 Those Swedes are everywhere

IKEA

Debby would say this is a "happenin' Mall," and
the stores were seriously slammed

Looks great framed

Thanks to the Hastings for a great day. That's all for now.
